General Aircraft Operations Procedures

Centennial Airport (APA) is one of the nation’s busiest general aviation airports. Due to the number of operations and the complex mix of aircraft types that utilize the airport, the ATC Tower has adopted certain special practices and procedures that help increase safety and reduce delays. The ATC Tower is open 24/7.

Runway Safety

Hot Spots

A hot spot is defined as a location on an airport movement area with the potential risk of collision or runway incursion, and where heightened attention by pilots and drivers is necessary.

  •  Hot Spot 1: Pilots instructed to taxi to RWY 17L and “Monitor Tower” sometimes enter the runway without ATC clearance. Expect to hold short. Tower will contact you.
  • Hot Spot 2: TWY A8, and TWY A9 are congested intersections.
  • Hot Spot 3: TWY D1 and TWY C1 are in close proximity to RWY 10.
  • Hot Spot 4: TWY B at B8 intersection, hold short of RWY 17L/35R and remain on assigned frequency unless otherwise advised.

Designated Run-Up Areas

Centennial Airport has designated run-up areas located at the north (A1), south (A16), midfield (A8), A14 compass rose, A18, and C5. Maintenance run-ups requiring personnel to exit the aircraft should be conducted at the C5 and A14 run-up areas. In all instances, please use a designated run-up area to help prevent debris and engine blast damage to other aircraft.
