2012 APA Construction

Spring construction season is underway and this year several projects will be taking place that will affect operations at Centennial Airport. In May, the Airport Authority will begin an FAA funded project to add paved shoulders to Runway 17L/35R and relocate the “North Run-up Area”. Near the end of summer, the Airport Authority will be re-striping airfield markings.

Project: Runway 17L/35R Shoulders
Related Closures: Runway 17L/35R
Anticipated Closure Dates: May 14th to June 20th
Adding runway shoulders is a long-awaited project for the airport.  Not only are shoulders recommended by the FAA for the type aircraft flying out of Centennial, but they will also enhance safety and decrease runway closure times.  The 20’ shoulders will provide extra room for aircraft that unexpectedly leave the main runway surface and allow a wider area for ARFF equipment to stage during an aircraft emergency.  It will also significantly reduce runway closure times for mowing and improve snow removal.  Dates are subject to change, so please check NOTAM’s for the most up to date closure information.

Project: A1 Runup Area Relocation
Related Closures: TWY-A between A1 and A2
Anticipated Closure Dates: May 14th to June 20th
During the runway shoulder project, the Airport Authority will be relocating the “North Run-up Area” due to FAA procedural and terminology changes. This will provide more space for aircraft run-ups, reducing congestion in the A1 area. All Taxiway Alpha pavement north of the extended Runway 17L threshold line will be removed as a part of the relocation. The project will run concurrently with the Runway 17L/35R closure and should be completed in time for the re-opening of Runway 17L/35R.

Project: Easter Avenue Detention Ponds
Related Closures: N/A
Anticipated Closure Dates: N/A
Due to the added impervious surface area of the paved shoulders and run up area, the Airport Authority will expand the detention ponds located north of Easter Ave.  The dirt from these ponds will be placed west of the Runway 17L threshold. Expect to see personal and equipment working in that area during nighttime hours.

Project: Annual Airfield Striping
Related Closures: Various Airfield and Ramp Areas
Anticipated Closure Dates: Phased closures near end of summer
Near the end of summer, the airport will be re-striping markings on the airfield. This is done annually to keep markings clear and easy to read. Short closures of various surfaces are expected and NOTAM’s should be checked for exact dates and times.

The Airport Authority is excited to make these valuable improvements and thanks you for your patience during the construction season. If you have any questions, please feel free to give the Airport Authority a call at 303-790-0598.
